What you will do

Role Overview:

The Associate Director of Construction provides strategic leadership for a rolling portfolio of projects and mitigates potential risk. Provides tactical leadership for project management and project controls, including scheduling and budgeting, and provides senior supervision of project-related activities. Develops strategic project objectives and provides direction for projects from mid-stage development through the final pre-construction phase by managing pre-engineering and constructability reviews, driving procurement of long-lead equipment, and leading the construction contracting strategy. Ensures that safety, quality, cost, environmental, landowner, and legal requirements are achieved or exceeded while accomplishing project objectives. 

Main responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for projects from mid-stage development through the final development phase, approximately 12 – 18 months before the start of construction 
  • Manage the integration of development and construction execution functions for committed projects 
  • Provide tactical leadership for the preparation and maintenance of detailed project execution strategies, including construction plans, schedules, and budgets 
  • Understand the implications of variance technical options and is able to guide engineering designs to achieve the best solution for each situation 
  • Support the balance-of-plant process, preparation of turbine installation bid documents, and the Request for Proposal process, and assists with the negotiation of construction contracts 
  • Provide leadership during project construction activities, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, cost, environmental, landowner, and other project requirements are met or exceeded 
  • Consolidate and analyze budgets, costs, forecasts, and utilization against established financial goals 
  • Ensure the execution of work in accordance with contracts and policies 
  • Direct planning and hiring of competent field staff in order to ensure adequate resources are in place for effective and timely execution of committed projects 
  • Develop effective relationships with internal departments, contractors, suppliers, landowners, and other stakeholders 
  • Manage the development of Construction Project Managers and provides supervision, guidance, and mentorship to assigned staff 
  • Support, and solicit input from, staff at all levels of the organization 
  • Establish effective and supportive relationships with colleagues 
  • Reinforce a team approach throughout the enterprise, both on projects and internal initiatives 
  • Effectively communicate relevant information to superiors 
  • Champion change and effectively manages the implementation of new ideas 
  • Additional duties as required

What are we looking for

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management 
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Master of Business Administration preferred 
  • 8-10 years in the renewable energy sector or industrial construction or capital project management 
  • Professional Engineering licensure preferred 
  • Advanced knowledge of construction management and constructing methods for large projects, contract management, procurement, and supply chain management, environmental and building permitting, and transportation logistics 
  • Basic knowledge of construction labor relations throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico 
  • Basic knowledge of applicable industry standards and codes, including Uniform Building Code (UBC), International Building Code (IBC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), National Fire Protection Association, (NFPA), and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 
  • Basic knowledge of land surveying methods and practices, aerial photography, and mapping (including UTM and NAD coordinate systems), and geospatial references 
  • Ability to interpret documents produced in AutoCAD, GIS, and other discipline- relevant software 
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products preferred. 
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise preferred

  • Lifting: Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 10 pounds and to occasionally lift items weighing between 20 and 40 pounds 
  • Climbing:  
    • Ability to climb turbine towers up to 95 meters in height approximately 5-10 times per year, or as needed 
    • Weight, including harness and tools, must be in accordance with the weight limit as specified by the ANSI Fall Protection Standards 
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on sites 
  • Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on sites 
  • Vision: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
